Headaches can have many possible causes, including stress, muscle tension, jaw clenching, bite strain, sleep disruption, medical conditions, and other factors. For some patients, headaches may occur alongside jaw discomfort, teeth grinding, facial muscle tension, or signs of disrupted sleep.
At The Airway Center, we evaluate the dental and orthodontic factors that may contribute to jaw strain, clenching, grinding, muscle tension, and bite related discomfort. We also listen carefully to symptoms such as morning headaches, restless sleep, snoring, or daytime fatigue so we can recommend appropriate referrals when medical evaluation may be needed.
Jaw Tension, Clenching, and Headache Symptoms
Waking up with a dull headache, sore jaw, or tired facial muscles may be associated with clenching or grinding. Over time, repeated pressure on the teeth, jaw joints, and facial muscles can contribute to discomfort in the jaw, temples, head, neck, or face.
Sleep and Breathing Concerns
Some patients who experience morning headaches also report concerns such as snoring, restless sleep, waking unrefreshed, or daytime fatigue. These symptoms may be associated with sleep disruption, but they require proper medical evaluation when a sleep disorder is suspected.
The Airway Center does not diagnose obstructive sleep apnea or other medical sleep disorders. If your symptoms suggest a possible sleep or breathing concern, we may recommend that you speak with your physician, sleep physician, ENT, or other appropriate medical provider. Diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea requires a sleep study.

Our Approach
Our role is to evaluate the dental, bite, jaw joint, muscle, and orthodontic factors that may be contributing to discomfort or dysfunction. Depending on your findings, recommendations may include oral appliance therapy for dental or jaw support, orthodontic arch development, TMJ focused care, myofunctional therapy referral, or coordination with medical providers.
For patients with physician diagnosed obstructive sleep apnea, oral appliance therapy may involve an FDA cleared mandibular advancement device used in coordination with the treating medical provider.
Every patient is different. Treatment recommendations depend on your exam, diagnosis, dental health, medical history, symptoms, and goals. No specific result is guaranteed, and headache symptoms should always be evaluated by the appropriate health care provider when medical causes may be involved.
