The TMJ is a very important joint and the most frequently used joint in the human body! It acts like a sliding hinge, that connects the jawbone to the skull. TMD or Temporomandibular disorder can be difficult to understand, and the causes are sometimes hard to pinpoint. Possible causes could be persistent grinding and clenching, damage due to an injury, restriction of the jaws during development or orthodontic treatment underdeveloped jaws and a lack of forward development. The upper arch (maxilla bone) is important to understand as it determines the position of the lower jaw, which in turn may affect the airway and the TMJ joints.
When your upper jaw remodels forward during the appliance treatment process, it can effectively realign your lower jaw, helping to relieve stress on the TMJ joint, while improving breathing and sleep, without surgery.
